I have had this lens for over 1.5 years now but it has not been used as much as I had hope for due to it is extremely wide angle of view. It is great for interior or architecture and landscape. There are some photos taken with this lens in my other galleries: Rain Forest (Malaysia), Ibiza (Spain) and Capuchos (Portugal).
Yesterday (26 May 2007) I decided to put this lens on my 350D and go to London West End and use it as a point & shoot for one day to see what photos I get out of it. Unfortunately, the weather was not too good (cloudy/rain!) and colours did not tuned out well so I decided to convert most of the photos to greyscale. All photos were taken at ISO100. Samples were converted from RAW using Capture One Pro (V3.7) with my usual exposure/saturation, white balance, sharpness and cropping adjustments. Some of the photos were adjusted in Adobe Lightroom to create vignetting to create a ‘film-like’ effect!
Overall, this lens is a challenge to use due to its extremely wide angle of view. For building or interior, one has to compose carefully to avoid rotation/cropping later on in software. However, I find that it is a perfect lens for candid street photography at a close range because it can capture almost everything up close! All you need to do is point your camera roughly at the direction of the subject and shoot! Of course you won’t get the straight line as you would like but then because it is so wide, you can always crop off the unwanted bits later. Some of the candid photos below were taken at a close range of less than 1m or few foot away from the subjects! |
