We started our journey from Ipoh town towards Sitiawan/Lumut. The journey took around 1hr by car (~60km from Ipoh). This mangrove swamp used to be wild but was recently branded and turned into a local tourist location by the Gov as the ‘Venice of Perak’. There is a small car park in front of the main entrance to the park (free parking and entrance!). The name of the park in Malay is ‘Taman Baya Bakau’ which translates to ‘Mangrove Swamp Garden’. On arrival, we were greeted with a bunch of wild monkeys begging for food! It is a pity that the place is littered with commercial wastes (cans, plastic bags etc) due to the monkeys ransacking the nearby bins and also due to lack of upkeep. We followed the wooden decking path (raised ~1-2m above grown) and ventured into the mangroves. The thick canopy of the mangroves creates a dark and cool atmosphere below. The low light condition makes photography a challenge. To make matters worse, it was cloudy and about to rain! I had to use ISO1600 on my Canon 350D and a steady hand to overcome the low light problem. The mangrove root system is simply fascinating and beautiful! I managed to spot a few mangrove ‘seeds’ hanging on the trees ready to pierce the soft ground below. More information about the Mangrove Trees here. |
