My Freshwater Snails Collection

Snails are simply amazing creatures and I adore them so much that they deserved to be photographed for all to see! Unfortunately, they are often overlooked as pests. Yes, some of them do eat plants but not all of them do. Those that don’t eat plants, they are very useful as they help to keep algae in check, eat leftover fish food/detritus, some (such as the Malaysian trumpet snails) help to keep the substrate/gravel loose and improve water/oxygen circulation through the substrate/gravel. Their numbers can indicate the health of the aquarium too. When you have over population of these snails in your aquarium, it indicates that you have overfed your fish! Or when they all rise to the water surface, it indicates that your water is depleted of oxygen!

Below are 7 different types of snails present in my tank. 6 of them are common freshwater aquarium snails came with plants that I bought and the remaining one is the Golden Apple Snails which I bought as pets. I have done some google research on these snails for species identification and according to the photos from various websites, I think I have correctly ID them with the following scientific names with links to each references (please let me know if their scientific names are wrong!):

1. Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea bridgesii effusa) (Reference photo/info)
2. Ramshorn Snail (Planorbidae, Gyraulus corneus) (Reference photo/info 1, 2 )
3. Common Pond Snail (Lymnaea truncatula) (Reference photo/info)
4. Malaysian Trumpet Snail (Malanoides tuberculata) (Reference photo/info)
5. Malaysian Trumpet Snail (Malanoides maculata) (Reference photo/info 1, 2)
6. Malaysian Trumpet Snail (Malanoides granifera) (Reference photo/info 1, 2-look for B=Singapore)
7. Unknown Ramshorn (Planorbidae, Gyraulus convexiusculus) (Reference photo-1, 2)
